Lives and livelihoods would be paralyzed, and there would be chaos and panic all over the globe. Technology has revolutionized the way we do everything. It has made life much more convenient and made possible may new things. The field of nursing too is no different – technology has brought about many changes, and while some of them may not find universal appeal, most of them are for the better. Technology in nursing has served to:

Make the jobs of nurses easier: With automated medical monitoring instruments being used more and more at hospitals, nurses find that it is now easier for them to do their job. No longer do they have to keep watching patients to see if their IV solutions have to be replaced or take their blood pressure at regular intervals. No longer do they have to stay glued to one patient's bedside and worry about the rest. They can provide care of increased quality simply because most of their routine jobs have been automated.

Open up more opportunities for nurses: Some nurses prefer to switch career paths at some point of time, and if they want to stay on in nursing yet not want to involve themselves in the day to day care of patients and in other clinical aspects of nursing, they can choose to go into the field of information and technology. Nursing informatics is a much-sought after career choice for nurses who are tech savvy and who know that their expertise in nursing will come in handy in this field.

Allow remote care and monitoring: This aspect of medicine is becoming more and more important, especially because of the shortage in the nursing industry. The increasing use of RFID devices to monitor the elderly and ensure that drugs are taken on time and correctly, the increasing dependence on telemedicine to provide diagnosis and follow-up consultations for people in remote locations, and the use of other forms of technology that allow medicine to be practiced offline and off-location have reduced the nursing shortage crisis and allowed the healthcare industry to continue providing quality care for patients.

Facilitate communication on the go: Technology such as Bluetooth has allowed nurses and other medical professionals to communicate with their peers and superiors even as they are involved in other tasks. This allows for multi tasking and efficient use of time. When nurses are able to use their time more efficiently, they can provide patient care of better quality.

Technology has ensured that the nursing industry is a far cry today from what it was even a few decades ago, and even though the change may not be all good, it has made nursing much more relevant and provided more opportunities than ever before.

By-line:

This guest post is contributed by Maryanne Osberg, who writes on the topic of RN to MSN Online Degrees. The syrup also showed great potential in slowing down the growth of cancerous cells. Maple syrup has thirteen active antioxidant substances.

These antioxidants were previously unknown but were discovered only recently. Because of these antioxidants, researchers have firmed up that maple syrup has a great potential in fighting cancer growth, diabetes, and infections.

Maple Syrup as an Anti Diabetic Food

Considerable amounts of the phytohormone, abscisic acid, are found in maple syrup. This acid is a powerful defense against diabetes and metabolic syndrome, because it encourages the release of insulin through pancreatic cells and enhances fat cells’ sensitivity to insulin. Seeram revealed the results of his tests on Canadian maple syrup during the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco.

Maple Syrup as Your Best Chance against Cancer

A recent study by researchers in Quebec showed that maple syrup has the ability to slow down the growth of cancerous cells. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Medicinal Food. The study was an attempt to test the capability of maple syrup in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.

The researchers proved that maple syrup is effective against cancer. More specifically, the syrup can significantly slow down cancer growth in the brain, lungs, and prostate. However, the effect of maple syrup on breast cancer cells was less significant.

Better Than Other Anti Cancer Foods

Maple syrup can serve as your tasty alternative in fighting cancer and diabetes. There are many anti cancer foods today like blueberries, tomatoes, broccoli, and carrots. However, recent studies have shown that maple syrup is more effective against cancer compared to other anti cancer foods. Laboratory testing results also show that the syrup is more potent compared to the maple sap.

It is also ideal to use the pure dark syrup rather than the lighter syrup. Dark syrup has high color oxidation. This is the reason why darker maple syrup should be preferred. So if you want a better alternative to fight cancer and diabetes, then your favorite maple syrup is a good option.

Reference: Journal of medicinal food. 01/02/2010; ISSN: 1557-7600, OI: 10.1089/jmf.2009.0029

About the Author - Sandy Harris writes for the diabetic appetizer recipes blog , her personal hobby blog focused on tips to prevent, cure and manage diabetes using healthy snacks and recipes.

The information was provided by a guest writer & not necessarily supported by Pittsburgh Nurse.

Memorable Moments in Nursing

What is your most memorable as a nurse or even as a nursing student?

Pittsburgh Nurse would love to hear from you. Good health begins at home; it depends on our lifestyles and our sense of hygiene. And if you don’t realize this, your family could be prone to various ailments, all of which could have easily been prevented. Help your loved ones maintain their health by:

Adhering to hygiene: The most important part of maintaining hygiene is to wash your hands as often as you can. Our hands are magnets for germs, and when we fail to wash them before we cook, eat or touch our children, we pass on the risk of infection to them and also fall prey to it ourselves. When we emphasize cleanliness at home and make our children realize its value, we are doing all we can to keep disease at bay.

Realizing the value of exercise: Regular exercise is a boon to those who are prone to diseases because it not only helps you reduce weight but also boosts your immune system and makes you stronger and fitter. So set an example for your children by working out at least four times a week. Get them to play a sport too as they need to be active and alert instead of spending all their free time in front of the television or with their video and computer games.

Emphasizing on fresh air: Very often, we tend to keep all our doors and windows closed because the thermostat is on and because we don’t want our homes to become dusty. But when we do this, we lose out on the fresh air that Mother Nature provides us with every morning. If you cannot throw open the windows to your home, take a walk in the fresh air every morning to inhale the breath of health and energy.

Cooking healthy food: When you pay attention to the nutrition value of food, you know you’re giving your children good health as a gift. We eat to live, and live healthily we must. So plan your meals and reduce the amount of processed food, snacks and junk food allowed at home. Emphasize on fresh fruits and lots of vegetables in every meal and steer clear of aerated sodas that have tons of sugar and only serve to increase your weight.

Knowing basic first aid: If you are prepared to administer basic first aid at home, you could save yourself the trouble of an extended visit to the ER. Small cuts, burns and other minor injuries don’t become serious if you’re able to stop the flow of blood or minimize the symptoms before you’re able to get your loved one to the hospital. Also, if you know how to provide basic first aid when someone is choking or experiencing a heart attack, you could end up saving their lives.

By-line:
This guest article was written by Jennifer Johnson, who regularly writes on the topic of nurse practitioner schools . H1N1, also know as the Swine flu, is a respiratory infection caused by the influenza A virus. The Swine flu is spread from person-to-person much like the any seasonal flu. The influenza viruses infect the lining of the nose, throat and lungs. The virus enters your body when you inhale contaminated droplets or transfer live virus from a contaminated surface. The virus is then transferred to your eyes, nose or mouth hand via hand contact.

The Swine flu is a new strain with a genetic make up of the combination of the swine, avian & human influenza viruses.

Swine flu symptoms in humans are similar to those of infection with other flu strains:

Fever
Cough
Sore throat
Body aches
Headache
Chills
Fatigue
Diarrhea
Vomiting

Swine flu symptoms develop three to five days after you're exposed to the virus and continue for about eight days, starting one day before you get sick and continuing until you've recovered.

Usually there is no need for treatment other than the symptoms. However, in some cases a physician may prescribe medication to reduce sever symptoms.

Common sense play a VERY important role in prevention of any flu.

Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently with soap & water. A good 20-30 second of hand washing with warm water is best. School aged children are often taught to sing the ABC song or Happy Birthday, to know how long to wash. If facilities are unavailable to wash, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Flu viruses can survive for two hours or longer on surfaces, such as doorknobs and countertops.

Avoid contact. Stay away from crowds if possible.

Stay home if you're sick. If you do have swine flu, you can give it to others starting about 24 hours before you develop symptoms and ending about seven days later.

Resources: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/swine-flu/ds01144

                    http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/05/090504-swine-flu-picture.html

Healthcare & Nursing

Healthcare reform has been a major topic lately. The old St. Francis Hospital was converted to a new pediatric hospital.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh was designed by Astorino, the full-service architectural and engineering firm. Astorino created this state of the art facility by utilizing a unique process that gained insights into the hearts and minds of patients, families and staff. The result is a hospital that meets the deepest needs of all who will inhabit this 10-acre campus for generations to come.

Nurses are getting older and fewer young professionals are entering the field of nursing. As a result, meeting the needs of these older nurses has become an issue in healthcare today. Astorino interviewed several nurses to find out what issues they had at work. It was from their input that Astorino attempted to solve these problems through innovative design.

Heavy lifting, inconvenient work stations and labor-intensive equipment were some of the results from the interview. With this in mind, Astorino used its experience in architecture and design to lessen the physical burden that occurs on a daily basis in the field of nursing.

According to, Astorino several features that benefit nurses directly are:

Computerized room-level observation stations and decentralized nurses’ stations allow caregivers to closely monitor and remain in close proximity of patient

Integration of mobile and wireless technologies such as patient alarms via wireless phones add flexibility and eliminate the need for burdensome equipment

Supply cabinets and medicine dispensers in close proximity to patient rooms offer easy access to supplies and medications

As a seasoned nurse, I feel that these are all an excellent benefits. If you can help him out in any way please do. Please read:

I am a medically disabled songwriter from St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, and have written many songs about many different subjects and in several different styles, but one in particular was a result of my numerous times spent in various hospitals in my area.

One of the last times I came home I decided to try and write one for those who had cared for my well being during those trying times and I focused on the ones that were fresh in my memory. The song I wrote about (and for) them is called "LADIES IN WHITE". They wore white uniforms and were all female (YES, I know that there ARE male nurses AND know that not many wear white any more... but besides how amazingly efficient and caring they were, that was what I remembered of them .. besides, since white is actually made up of all the colours of the spectrum, it therefore represents every colour). It is not rock or pop, rap or hip hop or even a ballad... it is just a happy, simple to sing-along-with, uptempo song.

I mention that I am medically disabled because various factors of my condition stop me from being able to use professional studios to record my songs, so I have to do them here, at home, in my basement, on donated equipment from musicians I used to work with. For the same reason, I also am unable to perform my music live.

iTunes : These antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin. So much is going on since graduation from Nursing School. You probably have started a new job & are on orientation. Learning more clinical skills now, than when you were in school. Your patient ratio will slowly increase. The number of meds that your patients require will double or even triple than when you where in school. You will also performing nursing procedures that you may have not done before like irrigating a G tube or flushing a central line. You now are working 8 to 12 hours a day if not more. Working shifts can really be stress on a person if they have never done it before. On top of all of this, you are preparing for the NCLEX. Talk about STRESS. What is a new grad to do? Well I have a solution.

STAT Nursing Consultants, is a Pittsburgh based consulting group & have been helping nursing students and graduates decrease their anxiety and enhance their thinking skills on tests. They help students who are at-risk of failing in nursing school and graduates who have failed the NCLEX. STAT Nursing Consultants use cognitive and behavioral techniques that can also be taught to improve any nursing student or graduate's test scores.

I have used STAT Nursing Consultants years ago after failing the NCLEX the first time I took it. STAT Nursing Consultants was well worth it. I felt relaxed & confident going in to take the exam. And yes, I passed my boards after my second try. I highly recommend using STAT Nursing Consultants.

For more information go to their website: http://www.statnursing.org/

Sarcoidosis

I was shocked to hear about the death of actor Bernie Mac & that he had Sarcoidosis. This rare disease is not something new to me. About 5 years ago my mother-in-law was having respiratory problems. She didn't think any thing of it, being that it was cold & flu season. However, when she was having difficulty breathing one Sunday afternoon, completely changed our lives.

She was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia, admitted for treatment & then discharged, only to be readmitted again. This time numerous tests & procedures. The anxiety of possible lung cancer. Then the diagnosis of sarcoidosis. My mother-in-law & I both being nurses have never heard of this diagnosis. This is when the research began. Here is a great website to get more information about this rare disease: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/sarc/sar_whatis.html

Famous actor & Revlon model Karen Duffy also was diagnosed with the same disease. Read more about her at:

http://www.usatoday.com/community/chat/1011duffy.htm

http://www.inspire.com/groups/stop-sarcoidosis/discussion/famous-people-with-sarcoidosis/

Teen Idol Speaks Out On Diabetes

Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers spoke on Fox & Friends today about his diabetes & to raise awareness of Juvenile Diabetes. This is a fact. Working as a School Nurse I have seen it first hand. We are required to send letters home to the parents for those who are at risk (BMI greater than 85%) & those who are over. Lots of paperwork & mundane calculations.

How do we encourage & teach these kids about getting fit? I am always brainstorming for new ideas "How can I connect with these kids?" Then last night while laying in bed, the light bulb went off. The Wii Fit! I know from recent experience with one that it is a great workout. Goals are set, you create a virtual trainer & your progress is tracked. Of course not everyone will have one. But if I know a student has one or a parent asks for advice, this may be a suggestion.

http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/Calculator.aspx

Percentile Range:

Underweight -Less than the 5th percentile
Healthy weight-5th percentile to less than the 85th percentile
At risk of overweight-85th to less than the 95th percentile
Overweight-Equal to or greater than the 95th percentile

New School Year, New Requirements

Wow! It is already August & school will be starting at the end of the month. August 28, to be exact. This will be my third year as a school nurse, I wonder what adventures await me this year?

One big challenge will be the massive paperwork with the new immunization requirements. I am dreading the non-compliant parents who won't send in the paperwork by the required deadline. Letters were sent in the spring by the superintendent, a note on report cards by the principal & a letter by the principal via snail mail. I think 3 notices are suffient, however this is only my opinion.

Here are the new requirements that will take place this school year. I have checked the Allegheny Health Department & PA Department of Health websites & the 2008-2009 immunizations are not listed at this time.

NEW SCHOOL IMMUNIZATION REGULATIONS (phased in by 08/31/08)
All grades K-12
4 doses of tetanus (1 dose after the 4th birthday); 3 doses if series started after 7
years of age
4 doses of diphtheria (1 dose after the 4th birthday); 3 doses if series started
after 7 years of age
3 doses of polio
2 doses of measles
2 doses of mumps
1 dose of rubella
3 doses of hepatitis B
2 doses of varicella or written statement from physician/designee indicating
month and year of disease or serologic proof of immunity

Grades 7-12 (in addition to the above vaccines)
1 dose of tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap)
1 dose of meningitis vaccine (MCV4)

When Anaphylaxis Looks Like Asthma

This is a great article a fellow school nurse sent me this past spring. To say home & raise my family. I didn't give it up completely, I did go casual after the birth of my first child. I managed to work casual up until a Case Management opportunity peeked my interest. I did this for almost a year. I resigned when my hubby was offered another job & we decided to have me stay home.

The summer prior to my youngest starting Kindergarten, I realized that it is probably time to find a job (once she started school all day). Who is going to hire me after being out of the clinical scene for about 3 years. It scared me because a girlfriend, who is also a nurse, told me that she was told she had to take a refresher course. Classes again? Oh God! Can I do this.

Then an unexpected opportunity fell into my lap. My neighbor told me that the school that my children go to did not have a nurse. So I hurried & updated my resume & applied for a sub position. I received a call 3 weeks later & was told to come in for orientation. This past year was my 2nd year as a permanent sub. I am no longer worried about the gap in years between jobs.

It was my anxiety about getting back into the work field that sparked this website.

I know there are nurses who blog in the Greater Pittsburgh area. If you are or know of a Burgh Nurse, please let me know & I will add your blog to the list! Just email whiteinc4(at)comcast.net and I would be more than happy to add them.

PA State Board of Nursing CE Update

The PA State Board of Nursing has update the date for obtaining CE's prior to renewing your Nursing License.
